Every few years, a handful of seemingly unrelated events occur that only later reveal themselves to be part of a much larger shift. At first glance, they look like isolated breakthroughs. A founder shares an extraordinary personal story, a startup emerges from stealth, or a new medical technology quietly appears. It is only when viewed together that they begin to tell a different story. I think we may be witnessing one of those moments in healthcare today.
Earlier this year, GitLab co-founder Sid Sijbrandij shared his journey through a personalized cancer treatment designed specifically around his disease. This week, TareBio launched with a platform that aims to design vaccines by studying the immune response that already exists within a patient rather than predicting which antigens might work. On the same day, Omanta Health introduced its vision of a personalized research lab for every patient, combining medical records, genomics, and the latest scientific evidence to identify, and eventually help create, individualized therapies.
These companies are solving different problems, but they all point in the same direction. Medicine is beginning to move away from asking what the best treatment is for a disease, and towards asking what the best treatment is for this person.
Why this is becoming possible now
This shift is becoming possible because several technological revolutions are converging at once. Affordable genome sequencing, advances in AI, rapid mRNA manufacturing, cloud computing, and increasingly automated laboratories have dramatically changed what is economically possible. A treatment designed for one patient no longer sounds quite as implausible as it once did.
We are also beginning to rethink how healthcare data itself is captured. Midjourney Medical has announced a whole-body ultrasonic imaging system where a patient is lowered into warm water while a ring of ultrasound sensors captures the body from multiple angles. Whether every part of that vision becomes reality is almost secondary. The important point is that innovators are no longer asking only how to improve existing tools. They are reconsidering how continuously and completely we might understand the human body.
The missing foundation is patient context
There is, however, one challenge that receives far less attention than the science itself. Every one of these approaches depends on data, and not just genomic data. They require the complete story of a patient, including laboratory history, medical imaging, clinical notes, medications, previous treatments, family history, genomic information, and increasingly data from wearable devices. Personalized therapeutics can only be as good as the understanding we have of the individual sitting in front of us.
Today's healthcare systems were never designed to assemble that complete picture. A patient's history is often scattered across hospitals, laboratories, imaging centers, specialists, and personal devices. As medicine becomes increasingly personalized, that fragmentation is no longer merely inconvenient. It becomes a limitation on what science can achieve.
This is why longitudinal health records will become one of the most important foundations of modern medicine. In the era of personalized therapeutics, patient history is no longer just documentation. It becomes an input into treatment design.

Looking at the work of Sid Sijbrandij, TareBio, Omanta Health, and others, it is difficult not to feel that healthcare is quietly changing direction. We may look back on this period as the moment medicine stopped asking how to treat diseases in general, and started asking how to treat each patient as an individual.
